Individual therapy for adult clients (ages 18+)

Healing work is non-linear, messy, magical, sometimes slow and steady, and other times big leaps all at once
— Shannon Schott, TLMHC

Welcome! Finding a therapist who is a good fit for your unique needs and personality can be a challenging process, and in my experience it’s worth the effort. You’ll get a snapshot of me on this page, and I invite you to reach out if you have questions or would like an initial session to see if we connect in the ways that feel right for you.

I’m a Temporarily Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Drake University. I am proud to be one of the original team members at Human to Human Counseling!

I love working with a wide range of adult clients, especially women, gender diverse, and LGBTQ folks. Many of my clients describe themselves as empathetic caregivers or helpers who find themselves struggling to feel truly seen, supported, or satisfied in relationships.

My goal is to support each person I work with to find or restore a deep, trusting relationship with themselves. I’m a guide and encourager who shows up with curiosity and without judgment. I will offer invitations to dig deep and go to vulnerable places that might feel intimidating or scary. You always decide what you’re ready for and what you need from me and the space I offer on any given day. Healing work is non-linear, messy, magical, sometimes slow and steady, and other times big leaps all at once. Despite the cliche, I encourage clients to soften, slow down, and “trust the process” when they show up in a big hurry to fix themselves. (Groans and eye rolls are welcome!) While slowing down can be one of the most challenging parts of therapy, it may also open the door to a new, lasting kind of growth that isn’t fueled by shame or judgment.

Why Shannon?

I learn and grow with each person who walks through my door. If you don’t see a specific topic listed, but you think we’d be a good fit, please reach out anyway. I’ll be excited to work on anything that matters to you!

Specialities

I describe myself as a relational therapist– meaning the quality of my genuine connection with a client is my top priority and the foundation of everything we do. I’ve completed training to use trauma-informed approaches including:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): EMDR activates both sides of the body, typically through eye movements or handheld “buzzies,” to engage the brain in a unique way that allows us to work through traumas that get stuck in our bodies and belief systems.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): We each have an internal world made up of all kinds of parts of us that think, feel, and behave differently. IFS helps us understand and embrace those parts, even the ones that seem unpleasant, icky, or downright bad, so we can find greater harmony and trust within ourselves.

  • Attachment Theory: Attachment theory highlights how our early experiences shape the ways we navigate relationships and find safety. In attachment-focused work, we connect the dots between past and present, exploring what conditions got us love, affection, and closeness, and what conditions led to rejection, distance, or punishment. It’s never too late to rewire these patterns to foster more authentic, satisfying relationships.
